A defence of reading slowly

I read about twenty books a year. For a while I found this embarrassing, because the internet is full of people reading a hundred, and there is an entire industry explaining how they do it. I have stopped being embarrassed, and I want to make the case properly rather than defensively. What speed reading actually costs The research here is fairly settled and fairly unkind. Reading rate and comprehension trade off against each other, and the techniques that produce dramatic speed gains — suppressing subvocalisation, wide fixations, skimming — produce corresponding comprehension losses, particularly on unfamiliar material. You can read familiar material very fast. This is not speed reading; it is recognition. When you already hold the structure, the words are confirming rather than informing. The moment the material is genuinely new, you slow down, because you have to build something as you go. The queue that does not exist Underneath the anxiety is a picture of reading as throughput: books are units, the shelf is a backlog, and a good reader clears it efficiently. But nothing about reading works like that. Nobody has ever been improved by the number of books they finished. What changes a person is a smaller number of encounters where something they believed stopped being obviously true — and that requires stopping, which is precisely what a throughput mindset forbids. The purpose of reading is not to have read. How I actually read now I stop when I disagree, and write down why before continuing. This is the single change that made the biggest difference and it roughly halved my rate. I abandon books freely, around a quarter of the way in. Finishing a book you are not learning from is not discipline. I reread. Perhaps a third of what I read in a year is something I have read before, which does nothing at all for the count. I keep one book that is too hard for me at all times and go at it slowly, in short sessions. The counter-argument, honestly There is a real case for volume. Breadth has value that depth does not — you cannot make an unexpected connection between two fields you have never touched, and wide reading is how people acquire the raw material for good judgement. Somebody who reads a hundred books a year genuinely does know more things than I do. So the honest position is not that slow beats fast. It is that they are different activities serving different ends, and only one of them is currently being sold as a skill. If you are reading to survey a field, go quickly and do not feel bad. If you are reading to be changed by something, the willingness to spend forty minutes on four pages is not inefficiency. It is the whole method.
