The tyranny of the optimised morning

The morning routine genre has an internal logic that eventually eats it. Each individual recommendation is defensible. Water on waking, sunlight early, movement before screens, a few minutes of quiet, journaling to clear the head, reading something worthwhile, planning the day before it plans you. Every one of those has something behind it. Assembled, they take two and a half hours, and they must all happen before the first piece of real work. The substitution What has happened is a substitution so quiet that people defend it as discipline. The routine was instrumental — you did it so that the work would go better. But the routine is legible, completable, and produces a feeling of competence on schedule, and the work is none of those things. So attention migrates. The routine becomes the achievement. You can have a genuinely excellent morning and produce nothing, and — this is the trap — it will not feel like a wasted day, because eleven boxes are ticked. A system that reliably feels productive is under no pressure to actually be productive. The test Ask one question of any habit in your stack: if the work went well today, would I still have wanted to do this? And if the work went badly, would dropping this have helped? For sleep and exercise the answer is clearly yes, keep them; they are not competing with the work, they are the substrate. For the fourteen-minute gratitude journal, honestly, most people go quiet. What I kept I ran the full stack for about a year and cut it to three things: get up at the same time, get outside within the hour, and start the hardest task before I have looked at anything with a notification in it. That last one is doing nearly all the work. Not because morning is neurologically magic, but because it is the only part of the day nobody else has a claim on yet, and the difference between a good working day and a bad one is almost entirely whether the first substantive thing you did was chosen by you or handed to you. Everything else was a very well-designed way of postponing that moment while feeling excellent about myself. It took me an embarrassingly long time to notice, because the mornings really were lovely.
