What nobody tells you about staying

The culture has become fluent in leaving. Boundaries, red flags, walking away, choosing yourself — a whole vocabulary, much of it genuinely useful, some of it hard-won by people who needed permission to go and never got it. What we have almost no language for is staying. Not enduring, not settling. Choosing, repeatedly and with open eyes, to remain with a specific difficult person. What actually predicts it People assume the couples who last are the ones who argue less. In my room that has almost never been true. The distinguishing feature is not conflict frequency. It is repair speed. Two couples have the same fight on a Tuesday. One is still not speaking properly on Friday; the estrangement has become its own event, layered on top of whatever started it. The other is awkward for two hours, and then somebody makes a joke that is not quite an apology, and it is over. Same conflict, entirely different marriage. It is not whether you rupture. Everyone ruptures. It is how long you can tolerate the rupture standing. Repair is unglamorous The thing people find hardest to accept is that repair almost never looks like resolution. It is rarely a conversation in which the disagreement is settled and both parties update. It is usually much smaller and slightly undignified. Making tea for someone you are still annoyed with. Saying "I do not want to fight about this" and meaning it as a concession rather than a manoeuvre. Touching their shoulder on the way past before you feel like it. Naming your own part first, specifically, without the sentence turning into an accusation halfway through. None of it settles the argument. All of it signals the same thing: I am still here, and the disagreement has not been promoted to a question about whether we continue. The part I get argued with about Some relationships should end. Where there is violence, coercion, or a sustained refusal to be accountable, the repair framework is not merely useless — it is dangerous, because it puts the burden on whoever is most willing to carry it, which is reliably the wrong person. I want to be unambiguous about that. But most of the couples I see are not in that situation. They are two reasonable people who have both quietly concluded that the other one has to move first, and who have been waiting, with increasing conviction, for about four years. What I usually ask is not who is right. It is: what is the smallest thing you could do this week that you do not feel like doing? The answers are always tiny. That is the finding. The distance between the couples who make it and the couples who do not is not made of grand gestures — it is made of a hundred small unowed kindnesses, and somebody has to go first, and it is never going to feel fair.
